Players hoping that Illinois would finally legalize online baccarat were disappointed by the state’s latest gambling expansion and will have to wait a while longer until lawmakers approve of online casino games.
Baccarat players were optimistic new Governor J.B. Pritzker’s gambling push would finally allow them to play baccarat online but online casino games were excluded from the gambling expansion passed by lawmakers.
The bill legalized sports betting in-person and online, approved six new casinos for the state, and allows new betting and gambling terminals to be installed at sports stadiums and airports. Unfortunately, online casino games were excluded from the bill and players who want to try their luck at baccarat will still have to travel to one of the state’s riverboat casinos.
Despite the setback, the massive gambling expansion and the launch of online sports betting means that it is only a matter of time until casinos are permitted to bring their games online.
Baccarat is growing in popularity in the United States but it is already one of the most popular casino games in Asia. Baccarat is a fun and simple card game that requires little skill and, unlike blackjack, there are no decisions to be made after the cards are dealt.
In baccarat, you can make one of two bets: the player or the banker. Each player is dealt two cards face up. The hand closest to 9 wins. Numbered cards are face value while face cards have zero points and aces count as one point. If you get 10 or higher, the first digit is dropped.
So if you draw a 2 and a 7, you have 9, which is as good a hand as you can have. If you draw a 9 and a 7, your hand is worth 6.
You cannot hit or stand like in blackjack. If the player has more than 5, the banker must hit on a hand that its 5 or less.
Your best bet is inherently the banker, because the banker has a 45.8 percent chance of winning any given hand compared to 44.6 percent for the player.
Most baccarat games take a 5 percent commission. There are also no-commission baccarat games but these can also come with reduced payouts. Some casinos offer different variations of baccarat but these tend to have a higher house edge than traditional baccarat.
Unfortunately, baccarat players will have to wait until lawmakers inevitably allow casinos to offer their games online just like they approved online sports betting.
Though casinos will not be able to immediately offer their games online, some “social” casinos already offer a sweepstakes-based approach to get around the current restrictions. These casinos use allows you to buy play money and “gift” you coins that can be redeemed exchanged for real money. This legal loophole allows players to play a variety of online casinos games without breaking any laws.
It remains to be seen when Illinois lawmakers will approve bringing casino games online but it appears to be only a matter of time.
